Level 1 Orienteering Officials Clinic

Ontario's newest orienteering club, the Caledon Navigators, has invited Dick and Pat de St. Croix to put on a Level 1 Orienteering Officials Clinic in the Caledon area on Sunday, Feb. 26. This will be a classroom session, then participants will need to manage an orienteering event - perhaps a GHO Adventure Nite - before receiving their Level 1 certification. Any orienteer is welcome to participate in this Officials Clinic - and it is highly encouraged. As we get more certified officials within our club, it opens up opportunities for all of us to race more. As an added bonus, designing race courses is a great way to improve your orienteering! For more information, please contact Nick de St. Croix at ndsc@sotique.com.

Marianna Wins Thomass Boisvert

Thomass Boisvert is by far the closest race in the 2006 Thomass series. After a back and forth fight throughout the course with Julia Cioban from GGO, Marianna managed to find the best route from the last control and edged out both Julia and Eugene Mlynczyk, from UKR, who finished off very strongly. In the end, Eugene finished second, one second behind Marianna and Julia placed third, three seconds behind...
Results are here.

In the overall standings, Mike Waddington is still in the lead but Barb Campbell and Hans Fransson are very close behind him. After another strong performance Sunday, Andrei Logvin moved up to fourth place overall. Overall standings are here.

GHO Around the Bay!

The 'Around the Bay' road race is one of the oldest races in Canada and even started up a few years before the Boston Marathon. The historical race is 'must do' for local road runners and attracts a large strong field each year. This year, the race is the morning after GHO's annual Peak to Peak race and we thought it would make for a fun weekend to put some teams into the relay section of the road race. The full run is 30km, but teams two or three are also allowed. The P2P is Saturday March 25th, and AtB is Sunday morning.

Here are a couple of options of what we could do:
1. Everyone makes their own teams, trying to make at least one team aiming for a GHO Canada GHO victory.
2. Everyone who is interested throws their name in a hat and we randomly draw teams to make it a little inter-club competition.
3. Everyone throws their name in a hat and we make teams as even as possible in a quasi-random way for some intense inter-club competition!

Post what your preference is and if you'd like to do Option 2 or 3, send me an email so teams can be made. goeresp 'at' yahoo.ca

Race entry is $150 per team of 3. The first entry deadline is February 5th, and max 200 teams are allowed - so think about if you'd like to do this.

Boldly GHO! To the Flying Pig!

The Flying Pig! is the orienteering race that usually kicks off the spring season in southern Ohio. This year it also will include the US Sprint and Relay Champs. 10 years ago HKF (now GHO) won the US Relay Champs and so the goal is to put together several teams to compete for the title once again. Teams are 4 person teams with a minimum of four points (points are awarded as per THOMASS). The races will take place on March 31st (middle distance), April 1st (Sprint and Relay) and April 2nd (Long distance). That is 4 races in 3 days. GHO members will be staying at the AmeriHost Inn in Batavia, Ohio. Book your hotel now. If you are interested in taking part in this event and being on a relay team contact Hans. GHO will pay for the entry for the relay teams.

TNT Training Tonight in Denmark?

Tonight's TNT (Tuesday Night Training) will be intervals with a twist. We will turn Chedoke Golf Club into Mindeparken in downtown Aarhus, DK (site of the 2006 World Champs Sprint Final). This is our first attempt to incorporate map similification, visualization, and route choice analysis of the World Champs terrain into our ordinary training. We will take turns reading the map during an interval and then during the rest describe the leg to another person.

The goal: "No surprises!"
