Eastern Canadian Championships

The Eastern Canadian Championship is an excellent event hosted by the Ottawa Orienteering Club, though it can be tempered by the weather. It looked like we would be lucky this year as the forecast was for warm and sunny weather even as last as Wednesday. Saturday was great with highs over 20°C and with the Senators eclipsing the Sabres in the NHL playoffs, what could be better for the OOC. However, Sunday returned to Victoria weekend form with bustery conditions and rain. With the forests just flushing, navigation was tricky in quite rugged and varied terrain. Well worth the drive, though that was a problem for some also.

GHO's Logvin family, Elena, Andrei & Serghei, did well, all medaling in the middle distance event and sprint events with Andrei being the big winner with a second in the middle and first in both the sprint and long courses for the M35 class. The battle was between Andrei and UKR's Eugene Mlynczyk with the advantage to Andrei this week. Serghei moved up in class to compete against older competition and performed well. Glenn and Ian completed the GHO roster, competing in a deep M45 field.

Thanks to the TOC crowd for arranging camping for the GTA clubs at picturesque Lac Philippe in Gatineau National Park! See ECOC 2007 for the results

Halton Hardrock Start Location Changed

Late breaking news! Rocky Ridge Ranch is going to be crowded this weekend, so we are moving the start of the Halton Hardrock event to the bend in the road at the corner of 10th Sideroad and 4th Line, just west of Rocky Ridge.

Directions: Take 401 to Exit #312 and drive north past the Mohawk Raceway to 10th Sideroad. Turn right and drive until the road bends sharply to the north, becoming 4th Line. The race will start at the trail entrance by this bend.

Because of lower entries, the kids' 2K course will not be offered this time, and the adult course will be designed Thomass-style with a mass start.

Registration opens at 9:30 a.m., with a mass start at 10 a.m. Remember that GHO Gold Card members get this event for free, so consider buying a Gold Card, if you haven't already.

The weather forecast is fantastic. See you there!

Michigan Race Report

Southern Michigan Orienteering Club, SMOC, hosted a three day event the past weekend north east of Detroit in the Pontiac area. These races also functioned as the team trials for the US national team.

First day was a sprint and Adria Fransson finished first in F35. Hans Fransson finished second in M21, 12 seconds behind youngster Michael Sandstrom.

Day two was the middle distance day and the course setter had put together excellent courses in a very nice area, Peach Mtn. Hans placed second again, and Glen Birnie came 5th in M50.

The long courses are always saved for the last day. M21 had 13 km and Hans did not do as well as previous days and finished 10th, Glenn Birnie placed 7th and Adria 2nd in F-Orange.
