I think we should reduce the number of events we host and offer more programmes instead (training, juniors, schools, rogaine, etc.). Make sure that the races we do host are big and well advertised and attended. Then spend the rest of the time on athletic development. ie., even more Scandinavian.

I also think that some events should be for free.

I agree. Training and those club activities are the programs which will foster that 'club spirit' which is lacking in so many Canadian clubs. This is what is needed to attract and maintain new members, particularly young ones. After all, practices are the crux of many other successful sports. The most enjoyable parts of my year were certainly the club trainings and having that club spirit, if only on a small scale compared to those Scandiland clubs!

I think we should recruit from the local cross country teams this autumn. Give each of the 5 local high schols say 3 or 4 free entries to the Raid the Hammer but make a 15km version for them. Then create a flyer that outlines what they need to do to make JWOC and the National team. Ideas?

Funny thing about JWOC is that people generally don't run very cleanly (compared to say WOC), so those at the top are the ones who are strong, but happen to make fewer mistakes on the day. I think that's a good thing for Canadians! Better chances for a wildcard to do well. But that technical base must be there. It seems like in Canada, that doesn't happen until 20s.

I think there's enormous potential for a school's RTH here. You only need 5 teams of 3 who are super gung-ho and suddenly you have your junior program back!
